Some Snow & Some Success
Hey Fam and Friends!
Another solid week down. I got a little taste of winter here
in Iowa. On Friday and Saturday a cold front dropped in and it went from 75
degrees and sunny to the low 30’s but it wasn’t too bad. Got all bundled up on
Friday and it even snowed. Everyone freaked out and they cancelled school. It
ended up snowing for about 15 minutes and that’s it…haha. Spanish is still
coming slowly. Tough being in the states where a big portion of the day is in
English but all the lessons and tracting are in Spanish and that’s where I
learn the most. Not to mention, every day we are fed by awesome Hispanic
families. With all of this, I’m confident that I’ll get the language sooner or
later.
We had a ton of success this past week. Seven new
investigators so we’ll see how receptive they are to the gospel as we meet with
them through the next couple weeks. With those new ones, we have around 15 or
so people that we are scheduled to meet with and continue teaching. Basically,
this upcoming week is going to be a busy one…no time for knocking doors!
Best Sunday of year happened this week…the PRIMARY PROGRAM!
And to make it even better, our investigator’s daughter was able to be in it.
The couple of times that they had come to church the Primary teachers gave her a
scripture to memorize, and she got up there and killed it! It was so awesome and
her dad, Luis, had the biggest smile. He loved it and I loved watching it all
happen! Luis is our main investigator that we are working with right
now. The Elders before me started working with him and when they started he was
smoking 30 cigarettes a day. Since then, he’s been seeing us a couple times a
week, going to church every week, and is now down to 1 or 2 cigarettes a day.
At the very least, he has until the 9th to make is baptismal date
(on his birthday, the 30th) but our goal is to have him done and
quit by Thursday. Been working with him and praying for him a lot.
Even though Luis is having success accepting the gospel, there is a really sad
part. He lives in a hard situation. He and his wife live in a trailer park with
six kids all smashed into one tiny trailer. To make it worse, the house is
falling apart and it’s dirty. With winter approaching fast, there’s no drywall
or any type of substantial structure to keep the house warm. It’s like an
icebox. Luis’ wife doesn't work and he quit his job because the people he was
working for would not pay him. Some other things are going on too so the past
couple of days have been really stressful and tough thinking about ways to help
Luis and his family out without having them completely relying on us to
provide. It’s been the toughest time for me because I really would do whatever
I could to help them. So please keep them in your prayers.
Overall, the work is really good here in Des Moines. Plenty
of investigators but we are really working hard with Luis. Read through Mosiah 14-16 this
week. Some really awesome things being taught about Christ and His Atonement! Mosiah 16:9 says…”He is the light
and the life of the world; yea, a light that is endless, that can never be
darkened.” It's awesome being a witness to the light
that is coming into Luis’ life.
Love you all!
