Carthage, Nauvoo & Sunday Candy

NAUVOO
Hello! Hola! Bonjour! Iakwe!

It has been a crazy and fun week here in Iowa so I’ll jump right into things…Tuesday, the four of us in Waterloo were able to take a nice little road trip down to Nauvoo! We spent the whole day visiting Carthage and the sites in and around Nauvoo. Carthage was amazing. Everyone that has experienced visiting Carthage always says that they leave knowing without a doubt that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. And from experiencing it first hand, let me tell you that it’s true! The Spirit hit me so hard the second I stepped into the room where it all went down. It turned a nice cool morning into a burning feeling within myself that was equivalent to a sauna. Just try to imagine that and then try to come up with something else in your mind and heart that can explain that burning within, undeniably the Spirit. An unforgettable experience and a huge testimony builder.

After, we headed up to Nauvoo for the rest of the day and night. We spent the day walking all the streets of old town Nauvoo. Then we were able to watch the Nauvoo Pageant to wrap up the day. Nauvoo is amazing and was it so surreal to actually be there! It’s also pretty funny…the entire town of Nauvoo thrives on the Church. The Church brings in so many visitors, mostly all members for obvious reasons. It was a nice change being able to walk the streets and have so many people come and say hi, being so nice, rather than everyone starring at you in disgust and confusion. Gotta love it!

Later in the week we had Zone Conference and E.Schoenfeld and I had to give a training. We were asked to train on the Sabbath Day and help missionaries effectively teach the importance of church attendance to our people. So naturally, we based the whole training off of Chance the Rapper’s “Sunday Candy” and the five candies of Sunday. They consist of: Command, Acquaintances, Noesis, Date for Progression, and Yoke of Christ. (Side note: Noesis was kind of a joke for everyone to just sit there in confusion trying to figure out what it meant. Just means receiving knowledge) Everyone took it really well and loved all the Chance references we were throwing out there. ‘Sunday Candy’ has been something we’ve been using to talk everyone before the training and since then. With using it we’ve seen a huge difference as they open themselves up to the idea of coming to church. Now we just need them to open their doors when we stop by on Saturday evening and Sunday morning….

Quick little story to wrap up the week. We ran into some kids the other day. One was 12, the other, Khalia, was about my age. We found out Khalia and his girlfriend are about to have a baby boy, so life for Khalia is coming at him fast. You could tell he was mad stressing. But we sat there and promised him the blessings the gospel could bring not just him but his soon to be baby boy. His countenance changed when he taught him about eternal families. He went from being lost and scared to having hope for the future and a had a big smile on his face. It was awesome to see that.

I’ll now be in a trio for the rest of this transfer…E.Schoenfeld just got the big call from Pres. to be his next AP.  Sad to see the man go!

Love to you all,

Elder Christensen
